Burnley are preparing for life back in the Championship after their relegation from the Premier League.

The Clarets were promoted to the Premier League after winning the Championship title in the 2022-23 season, and many had expected them to be able to make the step up to the top flight.

However, it did not work out that way, and Burnley were relegated after an incredibly disappointing season in which they won just five games and accumulated a total of 24 points. Despite suffering relegation with the Clarets, manager Vincent Kompany has made a shock move to German giants Bayern Munich, meaning the club are on the hunt for a new boss.

Craig Bellamy has been named as acting head coach, and it remains to be seen whether he will be considered for the full-time job, while a host of names have been linked with the vacancy, including Frank Lampard, Steve Cooper, Scott Parker, Raphael Wicky, Marti Cifuentes and Carlos Corberan.

Whoever takes over at Turf Moor will be inheriting a squad that looks capable of challenging for promotion in the Championship next season, but Burnley may need to sell players this summer in order to bring in new additions.

Burnley urged to consider selling James Trafford and Zeki Amdouni

FLW’s Burnley fan pundit Ben Livingstone says that goalkeeper James Trafford and striker Zeki Amdouni are two players the Clarets should look to cash in on this summer. Trafford joined Burnley from Manchester City last summer in a deal worth up to £19 million with add-ons, and he began the season as the club’s number one, but after conceding 62 goals in 28 league games, he was dropped for Aro Muric in March.

Despite his tough season, Trafford was named in the 33-man provisional England squad for the upcoming friendlies against Bosnia and Herzegovina and Iceland ahead of Euro 2024, and he is reportedly attracting interest from Chelsea.

Amdouni arrived at Turf Moor from Basel last summer, but he scored just six goals and provided one assist in 37 appearances in all competitions this season, and Ben believes the Swiss international should follow Trafford out of the exit door.

“If there’s one player we have to cash in on, it would probably be James Trafford in all honesty,” Ben said.

“Maybe Zeki Amdouni, but you would be happy to cash in on Trafford if you got £25 million or something like that, as long as you were making a bit of profit on him.

“There’s no reason to sell him as such, but we have got two keepers, so Trafford would be one.

“Amdouni would potentially be another, but that’s because I can’t see him wanting to stay in the Championship when he was the top scorer in the Conference League the season before he moved here.

“He signed for about £14 million, so you’re talking a really big figure, and he’s really, really not lived up to the expectation that everyone had.

“He’s been pretty woeful for most of the season, if not all of it.

“He came in and he looked good at the start of the season, got that really good goal at Forest, but he’s just not particularly looked anything special to be honest.”

Given the managerial uncertainty at the club, it is difficult to say who Burnley should sell this summer, but Trafford is one player that they should look to cash in on.

There is no doubt that Trafford has huge potential, and he looks destined to have a future in the Premier League, but the Clarets do not need both him and Muric in the Championship.

Muric performed well as Burnley won the second tier title in the 2022-23 season, so he would be a more than capable number one next term, and as they would receive a bigger fee for Trafford, it makes sense to sell the 21-year-old.

It was an underwhelming first season for Amdouni at Turf Moor, but he did show glimpses of his ability, and he could thrive in the Championship, so it may be worth keeping hold of him for now.
