“We’re working really hard but we need to spend to strengthen the squad in all areas” -Daniel Farke sends message to 49ers as he admits Leeds need new signings in Defence, Midfield and Attack ahead of season kickoff
Leeds United fans have been left frustrated by the club’s lack of spending – and while boss Daniel Farke identified where we need to spend, he is unsure Leeds will splash the cash.
Leeds have brought in Karl Darlow and Ethan Ampadu, spending around £7.4m in total – the large portion of that on the Wales star. Darlow has come in for a tiny £400,000. Add-ons have been included to take Ampadu’s fee to £10m.
But that is it, so far. Leeds have let Rodrigo go for £3m, while the rest have come in for a loan fee – Diego Llorente, Robin Koch, Rasmus Kristensen, Max Wober, Marc Roca and Brenden Aaronson all going temporarily. Others will go.
So, Leeds have actually spent more than we have raked in so far. Players with any value actually remain at the club but they may eventually go, allowing Leeds to take in some decent cash. Tyler Adams has a £25m release clause.
Asked about the transfer window and the lack of signings, Farke had his say. He says that the club are working hard to bring in new faces. He says we need additions almost all over the pitch, but that we might not be able to do it all.
“We are working hard. I am always realistic, I know we need to spend to strengthen the squad in all areas. We are strong in the goalkeeping position. In all other positions we need signings. Centre-back, full-back, physicality in midfield.
“Creativity in midfield, fire power up front. There are many wishes, but we have to stay financially disciplined. We have to be careful, because we can’t fulfil all the wishes, but I am really confident. We’re working unbelievably hard.”
While it is encouraging that Farke has made it clear that Leeds need to spend in pretty much every position, it is worrying that he says Leeds might be unable to match his wants and wishes. Leeds need mass spending now.
Injuries up top have made a new striker imperative. We have options in the middle of defence but for 46 games, three central defenders is not enough. Charlie Cresswell needs competition. Liam Cooper is no stranger to injury.
A replacement for Junior Firpo, a no.8 in the middle of the park, an attacking midfielder like Emi Buendia that starred during Farke’s Norwich years. A new striker though is crucial. Joel Piroe is the one to have been linked strongly.
