“They’ve got £25m for Summerville, but they wouldn’t want to spend that money on someone who’s older than the player who’s being sold”- Former Leeds star Carlton Palmer urges club to make U-turn in move for Norwich playmaker

Former Leeds United player and England international Carlton Palmer has asked Leeds to reconsider their move for Norwich’s star Gabriel Sara. Palmer believes that with the sale of players like Crysencio Summerville, Leeds shouldn’t waste the incoming cash on someone older than the outgoing personnel.

West Ham and Leeds recently agreed on a deal for Summerville, where the latter will receive £25 million in transfer fees. The West Yorkshire outfit already had an offer rejected which was bowled in at £5 million for Sara. Leeds are ready for another go but reports suggest that The Canaries won’t let go unless an offer close to £20 million comes by.

Football Pundit Carlton Palmer spoke to Football League World regarding the transfer saga where he expressed his opinions as to why Leeds shouldn’t go through with it.

“You would think, given that Norwich City paid £10 million for him in 2022, they will be looking in the region of £20 million. It’s believed that Norwich will sell one of their big names this season, such as Jonathan Rowe and Josh Sargent, who performed well last season, but they don’t want to get rid of Sara.”

“It’s one of those. Leeds have got £25 million for Summerville, but they wouldn’t want to be spending the majority of that money – as good as Sara is – on someone who’s older than the player who’s being sold.”

“They may go back with an improved offer, but it may still be nowhere near the £20 million Norwich are asking for. If they don’t go in with an improved offer of at least £10 million, I think they will turn their attention elsewhere.”

.Other major problems pose a challenge for Leeds. Firstly, there is the competition surrounding Sara. Excluding Leeds, three clubs fancy the Norwich playmaker, namely, Galatasaray, Leicester City and Crystal Palace. All the competitors have a better positioning in terms of finances and stature against Leeds at the moment.

On the other hand, following a failed promotion campaign, many star players left the team for better opportunities elsewhere.

There is Crysencio Summerville who Leeds is trying to replace with Sara but the transfer fees don’t make it sensible. 18-year-old Archie Gray left for Tottenham leaving £40m behind. Midfielder and forward Georginio Rutter is another among the names who’ll possibly leave Elland Road by the end of the season.
