“They planned to sell and make money on him but it looks like he’ll be staying, it just hasn’t gone to plan for them at this point” – Phil Hay says player who Leeds wanted to sell is now likely to stay as off field problems continue at Elland Road this summer
Illan Meslier now looking likely to stay at Leeds United with the deal to cash in on him not going as per plan, according to Phil Hay.
The Athletic journalist claims that the Whites were looking to cash in on the Frenchman this summer but did not succeed in getting that over the line. He has started the season as the first choice keeper despite the Whites bringing in Karl Darlow from Newcastle.
Speaking on the Square Ball on 14 August, Hay said at 16:43, “The one player who actually looks like staying at this stage, is Illan Meslier, the keeper that they absolutely planned to sell and make money on. It just hasn’t gone to plan, at this point.”
Meslier went from being one of Leeds’ biggest assets to a player who they couldn’t wait to get rid of and bring in the funds from his sale.
He had a disastrous end to last season, perhaps tougher than any other player in the team and lost his place in the eleven to Joel Robles.
All summer, he’s been linked with an exit and the Whites have not hid the fact that he was on the shop market. Interest in Darlow and his eventual signing led to everyone thinking that it was curtains for Meslier but somehow he’s still stayed at the club.
It now remains to be seen whether or not they can get a decent transfer fee for the Frenchman but the chances of that happening are low.
They’ve got more pressing issues to deal with so, as things stand, he’s set to stay at Elland Road this summer.
In other Leeds United news, the club could look to rekindle their interest in a Golden Boot winner who Daniel Farke will love and it will take £15million to get the deal done.
