“They have asked”- David Ornstein confirms Leeds have made contact with Everton over the signing of English defender, One stumbling block to deal still persists though with player demanding huge salary
Leeds United have indeed made contact with Everton over the signing of Ben Godfrey, but are currently some way off being able to strike an agreement.
Leeds are taking their time to get into gear in the January window with signings to bolster Daniel Farke’s squad.
His defence might have cruised through the last five games in the start of 2024, but additions at full-back and potentially centre-back could be useful for cover.
Everton centre-back Ben Godfrey has been linked with a move away from Goodison Park this month, with various clubs across Europe interested in signing him, as well as Leeds.
The Athletic’s David Ornstein has shared an update on Leeds business this afternoon, revealing that the Whites have made contact with the Toffees over the signing of Godfrey.
However, their current offer to Sean Dyche’s side is not nearly enough to see them accept, while a European club appears the most likely destination:
“They have asked about Godfrey but are a long way off what it would take to convince Everton to do business. Godfrey is also open to playing abroad, so that will expand the options if he is to leave.”
The Norwich connection between Godfrey and Farke stands to reason for Leeds’ interest in the player, and the fact that the 26-year-old would just be a great signing for Leeds.
Despite this, he very nearly headed to the Serie A earlier in the month before a move collapsed due to the abolishment of tax breaks in Italy.
A move abroad appears to be Godfrey’s current priority, as reports persist of clubs from Italy looking at signing him – a destination where other Englishman have headed and done well, such as Fikayo Tomori and Chris Smalling.
The finances of this deal in the January window would always be a difficult one to navigate.
Godfrey has clearly made it clear that his earnings will be vital to where he goes, as the tax break rules in Italy have decided that move would fall through.
If the 49ers are looking to be ambitious and get Leeds promoted, this would be an incredible way to do it.
