The players have been outstanding this week., it’s a brilliant point, Well done to everyone because most people didn’t give us a chance heading into the game”- Mark Robins hails unbelievable Coventry display against Leeds United

Mark Robins hailed his Coventry City players’ “unbelievable” discipline to get a superb and hard-fought point at high flying Leeds United.

The Sky Blues set out to stifle and stop Daniel Farke’s third placed side who are pushing for a swift return to the Premier League after relegation last May, and the tactics were spot on as they got to half-time without conceding. And although United grabbed the lead just before the hour, Bobby Thomas popped up with an equaliser eight minutes later and City hung on to earn a confidence boosting point at Elland Road.

“The division is very difficult for everybody but the way that we played and the way that we worked and got into the game and stayed in the game was really pleasing, and then started to play some decent stuff as well in really difficult circumstances,” said the Coventry manager after the 1-1 draw.

“The turn-around in games has been quicker for us and Leeds had an extra day’s rest and all of those things. The players have been outstanding this week.”

City’s tactics worked a treat with the team’s most attacking players Haji Wright and Callum O’Hare with defenders Jay Dasilva and Joel Latibeaudiere – the latter performing extremely effectively as a ball winning midfielder.

Robins agreed: “Yes it did but it wasn’t just that because they are really strong in the pockets of space. They have pace and guile, skill and know-how from unbelievable talent in the starting XI and on the bench, and then when we tire because of the squad difference then you are trying to fill holes with people who aren’t necessarily in those positions, so that’s why it’s a brilliant point, and we could have won if we had taken one of those chances on the counter attack. I thought we were really good.”

Asked about the really disciplined performance from his players to stick to the tactical detail, he added: “Unbelievable really. Brad Collins has been ill and came back in yesterday no feeling too great, so for him to perform like that was fantastic.

“It’s a brilliant place to play football but really difficult, and on the back of the turnaround of Wednesday’s game against relegated opponents, and then to come here against another relegated opponent that are flying really, it’s a brilliant point and we have to take our hats off and say well done to everyone because most people didn’t give us a chance heading into the game.”
