Texas is Hiring a high profile Coach, Matt Maron who has several years of Power Four coaching experience and is ready to make a great impact with Longhorns. Welcome,….
The Texas Longhorns have recently bolstered their coaching staff by hiring Matt Moran as a special teams analyst. Moran brings over a decade of coaching experience, including significant tenures at Power Five programs, positioning him to make a substantial impact on the Longhorns’ special teams unit.
Moran’s coaching journey began at Albright College in Pennsylvania, where he served as the running backs coach and special teams coordinator from 2013 to 2014. He then transitioned to Rutgers University as a defensive quality control assistant, focusing on defensive backs. In 2015, Moran joined Stanford University as a special teams graduate assistant, a role he held for eight seasons. During his tenure at Stanford, he played a pivotal role in developing standout specialists, including All-Pro punter Jake Bailey and kicker Joshua Karty, who was selected in the sixth round of the NFL Draft.
In 2023, Moran took on the role of special teams analyst and specialists coach at Boston College. Under his guidance, the team’s field goal percentage improved markedly from 57% to 83%. The following year, he joined James Madison University (JMU) as an assistant special teams coach. At JMU, Moran’s units excelled, ranking 11th nationally in blocked kicks, 20th in blocked punts, and 16th in kickoff returns during the 2024 season.
Moran’s diverse playing background at Bowdoin College, where he contributed as a wide receiver, free safety, return specialist, and occasionally as a quarterback, has provided him with a comprehensive understanding of multiple facets of the game. This versatility is expected to enhance his coaching approach at Texas.
The Longhorns’ special teams faced challenges in the 2024 season, ranking 117th nationally in ESPN’s SP+ rankings—a significant decline from their 17th-place finish in 2023. Issues such as inconsistent performances from kickers and punters, coupled with 17 penalties committed on special teams, underscored the need for experienced leadership.
Moran’s appointment aims to address these challenges. His proven track record in improving special teams performance aligns with Texas’ commitment to excellence. Collaborating with special teams coordinator Jeff Banks, Moran is anticipated to implement strategies that will enhance the efficiency and reliability of the Longhorns’ special teams unit.
Expressing his enthusiasm about joining the Longhorns, Moran stated, “So excited to announce I have accepted a position as Special Teams analyst for the University of Texas! Excited for the opportunity to come to Austin & be a part of the tradition!”
As the Longhorns prepare for the upcoming season, Moran’s extensive experience and strategic acumen are expected to play a crucial role in revitalizing the special teams unit. His addition to the coaching staff reflects Texas’ dedication to strengthening all aspects of their football program. Fans eagerly anticipate the positive impact Moran will bring, embodying the spirit of “Hook ’Em Horns” as the team strives for excellence in the seasons ahead.
