Report: Aston Villa join race to sign £40m rated Manchester City defender with player certain to leave Etihad stadium this summer

Aston Villa are joining the race for Aymeric Laporte amid claims that the Manchester City ace has been offered to Tottenham Hotspur.

Tottenham Hotspur may now face a battle for Aymeric Laporte with Aston Villa now interested in signing him.

That is according to 90Min, who claim that Villa have now held talks to sign one of two Spanish centre backs. Unai Emery has targeted Villarreal ace Pau Torres and Manchester City defender Laporte in the hope of signing one of them.

Both centre backs are natural left-footers with Emery potentially seeking a long-term upgrade on Tyrone Mings.

Villa have qualified for the Europa Conference League and boss Emery is now seeking some big additions. Laporte would certainly fit that bill whilst Emery already knows Torres well having worked together at Villarreal.

Either of these players would be major additions for Villa’s back line and Emery will be hoping to work some magic by luring one of them to Villa Park.

It’s added that Laporte – hailed as ‘incredible’ by Pep Guardiola last year – would be available for around £40million, £17million less than City paid for him in 2018.

Tottenham could miss out on Aymeric Laporte
The report also highlights potential interest from Tottenham Hotspur as they look to bring in new defenders..

90Min reported in April that Tottenham had been offered the chance to sign Laporte this summer. Spurs completely fell apart though and not only missed out on the Champions League but also on European qualification altogether.
