OPINION: Coventry City should be blamed for Callum O’Hare current situation as Sky Blues could now lose midfielder for free this summer after failing to offer him longer deal in 2022
Coventry City could be set to lose the highly-rated attacking midfielder this summer.
Callum O’Hare’s future with Coventry City remains uncertain as his contract is set to expire this summer.
Despite his importance to the team, O’Hare’s deal in 2022 was short, leaving him open to interest from other clubs. Coventry City could have secured O’Hare with a better deal, and now they risk losing him for free to other clubs.
Callum O’Hare has been instrumental for Coventry City over the past few seasons, but the 25-year-old’s future with the club is currently in limbo.
O’Hare first joined the Sky Blues on a loan deal from Aston Villa ahead of the 2019/2020 campaign. At the time, Coventry were playing League One football, but O’Hare became an important figure during the club’s title-winning season.
Following his release from Aston Villa, Sky Blues manager Mark Robins immediately snapped up O’Hare on a three-year deal.
As it stands, O’Hare’s contract with Coventry is set to expire this summer, which would mean that the Sky Blues would lose the talented playmaker for nothing.
Back in March, Robins said O’Hare wanted to keep his options open moving forward. Recent reports have suggested that a whole host of Premier League teams are chasing his signature, as well as promotion-chasing Southampton.
He’s also been linked with a move to Scotland, with Celtic and Rangers reportedly showing interest. After signing with Coventry in the summer of 2020, O’Hare penned fresh terms with the club in January 2022.
Considering his age and outstanding talent, it was surprising that the Sky Blues didn’t tie one of their most important players down to a longer deal. That decision seems to be coming back to haunt them now.
Coventry City should have done better with Callum O’Hare’s latest deal
It’s quite remarkable that Coventry and O’Hare are currently in this situation. He is an incredibly important player for the club, and the deal he signed in January 2022 should have reflected that.
It’s said that O’Hare is only earning £10,000 a week, currently making him the joint-third highest-paid player at the Club, according to Capology. And the fact that his extended agreement with Coventry was only until July 2024 certainly raised some eyebrows.
The Coventry hierarchy could have done more to make O’Hare feel more valued at the time by offering him more money and a longer deal.
From Coventry’s perspective, they could have also already cashed in on O’Hare. Bids reportedly came in for the attacking midfielder in January from Burnley, Southampton and Leicester City.
Instead, the club are now waiting to see if O’Hare will sign a new deal. A fresh contract has reportedly been offered. However, it appears that the Sky Blues will lose one of its most promising talents for free, a situation that certainly could have been avoided.
Despite the ongoing uncertainty, O’Hare continues to give his all for Coventry, most recently coming on as a substitute for Kasey Palmer in Easter Monday’s home defeat to Cardiff City.
