Premier League rivals Leicester City have been successful in their appeal against an alleged breach of profit and sustainability rules (PSR).
The Foxes will avoid a points deduction this season after an independent panel ruled that there was no jurisdiction for the case to be heard. Rival clubs, including Nottingham Forest, are said to be shocked by the outcome while the Premier League released a statement in which they said they were “surprised and disappointed”.
Forest were one of the clubs handed a points deduction in the 2023/2024 campaign alongside Everton for breaching PSR rules. Under the rules, clubs are permitted to make a loss of £105m over three years.
News of Leicester’s success has sent a ripple through the rest of English football. On the one hand, people are seemingly happy that a club has exploited a loophole and made a mockery of the league’s PSR rules but for Forest fans, there is a feeling in the air that they have been hard done by.
Writing on X, one supporter said:
I’m sure there are far more intricacies than I’m aware of, but why does a year of Championship football get Leicester out of charges but Forests 2 years contributes to a PSR charge and 4 points deducted…. #NFFC

Unbelievable. How Forest couldn’t use the fact that two of the three years were at championship level as mitigation yet Leicester who were in the prem for all 3 years can get away with it?!
Baffling.

Another added: “Peeved, baffled, shocked, appalled. One rule for one, one for another. I know it is an independent panel, but there must be some consistency! Either, Leicester should have been punished, or Forest shouldn’t have been.

“So two of forests years were outside the prem but they can be punished yet a panel have ruled that Leicester can’t be? Just be consistent one way or the other, premier leagues a shambles,” stated a fourth.
