“Leeds are willing to sell him this summer, it’s understood that he’s not part of Daniel Farke’s first-team plans going forward”- Carlton Palmer says Leeds midfielder will leave club permanently this summer after loan spell

Carlton Palmer has claimed that Leeds United loanee Sam Greenwood will leave the club in a permanent deal after his successful loan spell at Middlesbrough so far this season.

The midfielder joined the Teeside club on loan last summer and have been a regular for Michael Carrick’s side, with a £1.5m option to make the deal permanent in the deal.

Carrick has so far refused to commit one way or another but Palmer, speaking to Football League World, admits that he expects the player to move permanently but if Middlesbrough don’t take up their option to sign him then other Championship clubs will be interested in a deal.

“It has been reported that Leeds are willing to sell Sam Greenwood this summer. It’s understood that he’s not part of Daniel Farke’s first-team plans going forward,” he said.

“Middlesbrough have a £1.5 million clause that they can pay to buy him at the end of the season. He’s been an integral part of Michael Carrick’s side this season, starting 21 of 30 games so far, and he’s contributed to five goals and three assists.

“I certainly think there will be plenty of interest in Greenwood going forward, but as Middlesbrough have learnt from previous years about taking players on loan, and them doing well for them, they can be out of the hunt to sign them, because the price has been pushed up.

“There will be Championship interest in Greenwood if Boro don’t pursue a deal and activate the clause they have. There will be plenty of options from other clubs who will be happy to sign him.”

It’s been pretty clear since day one that Greenwood has no future at Elland Road, because Daniel Farke made it abundantly clear that everyone he wanted to stick around did for the most part.

Greenwood is a young player who has good talent and can play in a variety of positions, but the squad at the club these days is far better than what he can offer and there’s nothing wrong with that.

His performances for Middlesbrough have been solid this season and after agreeing a £1.5m price it would be a real surprise if they didn’t take that option up.

He could easily be sold on for more and if that clause wasn’t already in existence you could bet that Leeds would be asking for more than that to allow him to leave permanently in the summer.

As it stands though they’re unlikely to have much say in the issue, but they’ll know what they agreed too and it will be seen as a cash windfall rather than losing someone for less than their worth.
