“It’s Professional suicide, You wouldn’t see that at under-10s let alone in the Premier League” -Alan Shearer & Sam Allardyce both slams Leeds players as 4-1 defeat condemns Whites to PL relegation
Alan Shearer and Sam Allardyce have both slammed Leeds United players after a 4-1 defeat at home to Tottenham all but confirmed the club’s relegation to the championship next season.
Former England captain Alan Shearer pointed to one area that has led to Leeds United’s relegation from the Premier League.
The defeat against Tottenham that confirmed the Whites relegation summed up their season in many ways with few positive moments being completely overshadowed by self-inflicted blows that caused maximum damage and ultimately sealed their fate.
Shearer picked up on several errors made by Whites defenders in the comprehensive defeat against Spurs and insisted that was one of the key reasons behind their unsuccessful fight against the drop.
Speaking on Match of the Day on Sunday night, the former Newcastle United striker said: “Defensively, they’ve been an embarrassment,, haven’t they? Some of the defending today, you wouldn’t see at under-10 level, let alone in the Premier League.
“Yes, Tottenham have some really good players, particularly in forward positions, but when you see basic errors, players not sticking with men, mistake after mistake, and this has happened all season. 78 goals they’ve conceded, which is pretty embarrassing, and when you’re conceding that many, you’re not giving yourselves a chance and it’s not going to happen.”
Leeds manager Sam Allardyce also slammed his players for committing ‘professional suicide’ in their limp defeat to Spurs, with an enraged Elland Road crowd showing their displeasure throughout as their three-year top-flight stay ended.
The Whites took just one point from their four games under Allardyce, 68, who was their third manager of the season after they sacked both Jesse Marsch and Javi Gracia.
‘It’s professional suicide,’ said Allardyce, who will discuss his future with Leeds chiefs this week after suffering his second relegation in as many jobs, having gone down with West Brom two years ago.
‘We messed up again. We gifted them goals with huge unforced errors.
‘That probably says it all for Leeds this season. I wanted to go out with a sense of pride today, but unfortunately, I didn’t see that.
Sam Allardyce apologised to the fans after the game after failing to keep the West Yorkshire side up
‘I’d have hoped I could have got a bit more out of them, so I take responsibility for that. The last thing I wanted was to be the man who took Leeds United down.
‘To the fans, I apologise that I didn’t do better and the players didn’t do better.’
