“If Sir Alex hadn’t called me then who knows, I could have probably signed for Everton, I was an Everton fan as a kid, you know”- Michael Owen reveals he nearly joined Everton after leaving Newcastle

Michael Owen has revealed that he was close to joining Everton on a free transfer before Sir Alex Ferguson took him to Manchester United.

Owen left Newcastle at the end of his contract in 2009 and was available on a bosman transfer, before joining Manchester United in a stunning deal.

But the Liverpool legend told Prime Video (27 December, 19:13), that he almost made a different shocking switch to Goodison Park after meeting then-manager David Moyes about a deal after being snubbed by the Reds about a return to Anfield.

“Well yeah actually one of my options at the time was Everton, when I left Newcastle,” he said. “I was on a bosman transfer.

“Of course, the first person I picked the phone up to I tried to get back to Liverpool of course. But when they had already said that they were full up in that position then of course you look around.

“David Moyes was one person I met and if Sir Alex [Ferguson] hadn’t have called me then who knows, I could have probably signed for Everton. I was an Everton fan as a kid, you know.”

What an absolute nightmare of a transfer that would have been if Owen had worn the famous blue of this great football club.

A world class talent in his early years, Owen made a name for himself with Liverpool and is now synonymous with their club for the rest of his life. His move to Old Trafford made him less popular with fans, but it’s his time at Liverpool which is most memorable about his career.

At that point in time he was a shadow of himself after several injuries and serious form issues over the years, so coming to Everton would’ve ended up just being a payday for him.

The Toffees had Louis Saha, Yakubu, Jo and Victor Anichebe as striker options for the 2009/10 season and ended up finishing the campaign in eighth place.

Adding him was unlikely to help us much considering Saha hit 15 goals that year, so we’ll mark that down as a thank you to Sir Alex for this one not going through.
