“I never wanted to leave Leicester, The offer from Nice came in as a test, The response I got from Leicester told me, unfortunately, everything I needed to know”- Kapser Schmeichel reveals he never wanted to leave Leicester last season as he says club never made an effort to keep him
Kasper Schmeichel reveals the Foxes had an opportunity to re-sign him last season but did not take it as they suffered an ‘awful’ relegation
Leicester City “had the opportunity” to bring Kasper Schmeichel back last season, but turned it down.
That’s according to the goalkeeper himself, who has reflected on his City exit and whether he would come back to the club in the future. The 37-year-old left in the summer of 2022 and joined Nice in a cut-price deal with Leicester’s blessing.
He has now revealed that Leicester had an opportunity to bring him back last term but didn’t take it, despite Schmeichel having hurdles put in front of him in Nice. The club legend has also opened up on watching the “awful” relegation unfold last season.
“I never wanted to leave Leicester,” Schmeichel told Sky Sports. “It was a weird situation in the sense that I was coming into the last year of my contract, I was turning 35, we had the World Cup…
“This offer from Nice came in and it was more of a test (to Leicester) to say ‘Listen, I’m 35, they’re offering me a three-year contract, are you interested in keeping me?’
“The response I got told me, unfortunately, everything I needed to know. To then see, the season after, what happened (relegation) was awful.
“I spent every Saturday, or whenever they were playing, watching the games. It wasn’t fun, it definitely wasn’t fun to watch.”
On whether he would like to return to Leicester, he said: “They had the opportunity to bring me back last season, they didn’t do it. If Leicester came calling, I don’t think I could ever turn them down.”
