Former Everton chief Keith Wyness has insisted Burnley should “suck it up” and avoid taking legal action against the Toffees for their 2022 relegation.

Speaking on the new edition of Football Insider’s Inside Track podcast, the 66-year-old – who served as CEO at Goodison Park between 2004 and 2009 and now runs a football consultancy advising elite clubs – claimed any potential damages awarded to the Clarets would be “minimal”.

The Daily Mail reported last week (6 March) that Burnley are taking legal advice over suing the Premier League for compensation.

This news comes after Everton’s punishment for breaching Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) was confirmed as a six-point deduction.

Burnley were relegated from the top flight at the end of the 2021-22 campaign and feel the Merseysiders’ inflated spending handed them a sporting advantage.

The Lancashire club are now back in the Premier League but look set to drop back down to the Championship, while Everton sit four points above the drop zone with 10 games to play.

Wyness told Football Insider‘s Insider Track podcast: “I don’t see any case for Burnley.

“It’s very hard to show that you’ve gained sporting advantage and it was not the fault of the other team for not performing well enough on the day.

“I really can’t see those cases amounting to much. If they did, then any penalty for damages would be minimal.

“I think it’s a waste of time, I think it’s in bad faith.

“Burnley and the other sides have just got to suck it up and concentrate on winning more football games.”
