The Bluebirds still need direction from the top in order to generate more cash from player sales moving forward. Cardiff City have a potential £30m player on their hands in Rubin Colwill and his brother Joel is just as good, according to club legend Sean Morrison.

Rubin’s potential has always been clear for all to see and over the last few months he is starting to look like the player many thought he would become. Granted, he has played in a struggling team for the lion’s share of his senior career and it has been a seemingly constant battle for managers to trust him with a starting place, often focusing on the negatives to his game rather than the abundance of positives.

Under Omer Riza particularly, Colwill, 22, has shone in recent weeks and ran the show in the 5-0 win over Plymouth Argyle, scoring one and assisting a further two.

While he is by no means the complete package yet, Morrison believes there is big potential for the club to net a serious profit on the Wales international. The former Cardiff skipper also believes Rubin’s 19-year-old brother, Joel, could be just as good. Sign up to our daily Cardiff City newsletter here.

“He’s got the potential to be a £20m player, £30m player,” Morrison said of Rubin on The Central Club podcast. “He’s got everything. And his little brother is just as good as well! His little brother is on loan at Cheltenham. He is a good player as well.”

Cardiff are still right up against it and sit in the relegation zone at time of writing, despite earning seven points from their last three games – which gives you the context of just how badly they started the season.

He added: “I’ve always thought that the club has been crying out for a director of football or somebody who is in the middle, who can run the business side and football side.

“So, regardless of the manager, there is a 10-year plan. A 15-year plan. Whatever the plan is, that can never divert. Whoever you bring in as a manager is a certain type. There is a certain type of football you play. There is a certain of type of player you bring in. That never changes regardless of who the manager is.

“When there is a high turnover as manager, the changing room changes constantly. So you’re always playing catch-up.

“Whatever happens, I hope they start planning long-term. That starts with the people you bring through from the academy, more players coming into the first team, the club will generate more income through selling players, more players will play for the first team from the academy. Managers will stay longer, more success, promotions.

“Once that promotion does come then it’s about sustainability. Staying in the Premier League should be easier.”
