“He’s an outstanding footballer, he’s going to be a real statement signing as it would show they mean business”- Alan Hutton urges Aston Villa to sign World Class Spanish star for Unai Emery this summer

Pau Torres will be a real statement signing for Aston Villa while Calum Chambers will drop down the Aston Villa pecking order if the Spaniard joins from Villarreal this summer, according to Alan Hutton.

Football Insider reported on 5 June that the Villans have made an “official move” to sign the 26-year-old Spain centre-back, who’s won the Europa League while playing for Unai Emery at Villarreal.

It is understood that as the defender’s contract expires next year, the La Liga club could be forced to cash in on him amid interest from Villa Park. According to an update by 90min, Torres has a release clause in his contract worth around £42.7million (€50m).

Hutton believes that if Torres is signed this summer, he would be a starter for Villa, which would definitely have an impact on Chambers’ standing in the squad but also on some of the mainstays.

“He would definitely fall down the pecking order, there’s no getting away from that,” Hutton told Villa News when asked about the impact of signing Torres would have on Chambers. “He struggled for game time as it was.

“For someone like Torres to come in, who’s an outstanding footballer, who knows the manager, you would imagine he would be coming in to be a starter. He’s going to be a real statement signing if they manage to get him to Villa Park as it would show they mean business and really looking to build under Unai Emery”

“They’ve got Ezri Konsa and Tyrone Mings who’ve played really and Diego Carlos who’s just come back from a serious injury and was bought for big money to replace the likes of Mings.

“It’ll be an interesting line-up come the first day of the season if everyone’s fit and if Torres is there.

“He’s an outstanding footballer and it’ll be very difficult to bring a player like that into the squad and not start him.”

Torres played 39 times in all competitions for Villarreal this season.
