The sports world is mourning the loss of several esteemed athletes who have recently passed away, leaving behind rich legacies and profound impacts on their respective sports.

Mike Collier (1953–2025)

Mike Collier, a former running back for the Pittsburgh Steelers and Super Bowl X champion, passed away at the age of 71 in Maryland. Drafted in the 14th round of the 1975 NFL Draft, Collier was known for his versatility and special teams contributions. He played a pivotal role in the Steelers’ victory over the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl X. After retiring from professional football due to injuries, Collier dedicated himself to community service and worked as a grocery store manager. He is survived by his wife, three children, and six grandchildren. 

John Cooney (1998–2025)

Irish boxer John Cooney, a promising southpaw from Galway, tragically passed away following a bout in Belfast. Known for his dedication and resilience, Cooney had recently returned from a hand injury and was on the path to significant achievements in boxing. The match, intended as a stepping stone to a European title, ended with Cooney undergoing surgery for a brain bleed, leading to a coma and his subsequent passing. His death has reignited discussions about boxing safety and the inherent risks of the sport. 

Rickey Henderson (1958–2024)

Baseball legend Rickey Henderson, Major League Baseball’s all-time stolen base leader, died at the age of 65. Henderson’s illustrious career spanned 25 seasons, during which he was celebrated for his exceptional speed and batting prowess. Inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2009, Henderson’s dynamic playing style left an indelible mark on the sport. 

Shelby Daniele (2001–2024)

Shelby Daniele, a former track and field star at California Polytechnic State University, passed away suddenly at the age of 23, just months after earning her master’s degree in agriculture. Daniele was an exceptional student-athlete, holding the university’s indoor 200-meter sprint record and ranking highly in other sprint events. Her untimely death has left a significant void among her teammates, coaches, and the broader Cal Poly community. 

These athletes’ contributions to their sports and communities have left lasting legacies. Their passion, dedication, and achievements continue to inspire fans and fellow athletes worldwide.
