“He would have been really angry with the manager, he’s got every right to bang on the manager’s door”- Alan Shearer says Newcastle star is angry with Eddie Howe actions Vs Brighton as he calls for Magpies head coach to make changes after 3rd successive defeat

Alan Shearer says Callum Wilson is ‘really angry’ with Eddie Howe after he didn’t start Newcastle United’s 3-1 defeat to Brighton and Hove Albion on Saturday.

For the fourth Premier League game running, Callum Wilson has come off the bench, and for the second time, found the back of the net.

In comparison, Alexander Isak hasn’t scored since Newcastle United’s opening day win over Aston Villa, with Shearer adding that Wilson has ‘every right’ to be banging on Eddie Howe’s door insisting to start, as he told Premier League Productions.

What’s even worrying for the Magpies is that, since putting five past Villa, they have looked out of sorts in the Premier League.

And, after the international break, they have the small matter of having to deal with the Champions League, which is only going to make it tougher.

Nonetheless, as Newcastle, who only lost five Premier League games last season, suffered their third defeat on the bounce, this is what Shearer had to say about Howe’s actions of not starting Wilson from the off.

“It’s a really clever finish from Wilson,” said Shearer. “Just watch the outside of the right foot, the balance. Clever. He sorts of guides it in.

“He would have been really angry with the manager because he’s not started. Not started again and didn’t start the last game.

“No-one could come off that pitch with any credit, other than him in a Newcastle shirt. He has got every right to bang on the manager’s door and insist ‘start me, play me in the next game’.”

At full time Shearer was full of praise for Brighton but not so much for Newcastle posting on X:

“Brilliant Brighton. Magnificent [Evan] Ferguson. Other than [Callum] Wilson Newcastle very poor in every department today. A tough start to the season i know but they were all over place.”

All over the place is putting it lightly, really. For me there was not a single player, except, as Shearer said, Callum Wilson, who could walk off that pitch with their head held high.

It’s time for Howe to make some big calls in this side. There’s no point bringing in players as competition for the starting eleven if those players don’t feel that their place is genuinely under threat. Some players are being picked based on historic form rather than current form it feels like, and that’s not right.

It is still very early days, and we have had the most difficult start to the season of any team in the Premier League, so let’s not get too carried away yet, but something does need to change when the league resumes after the break.
