Burnley were said to have failed with a number of bids to try to sign Plymouth Argyle star Morgan Whittaker in the final few days of the transfer window, as the Greens held firm in their negotiations over their star man.
Scott Parker’s side were reported to have made a last-ditch attempt to bring the former Swansea City man to the club, with deadline day rumours circulating that a deal was close to fruition.
With 19 goals in the Championship for the Pilgrims last season, Whittaker has proven he is a top performer at the level, with the Clarets just one of a number of sides who took an interest in him over the summer.
Argyle were unrelenting in their transfer business negotiations Whittaker all summer, with Burnley’s unsuccessful bids adding to the offers from Scottish side Rangers which were also said to be rejected in the summer.
The Pilgrims were said to have placed a £10 million price tag upon their forward’s head, which fended off interest from a number of parties, before the Clarets came in with an eleventh-hour move. With hours in the summer transfer window remaining, the Devon outfit outlined their definitive stance that their top talent wasn’t for sale, leaving Burnley heading back to the drawing board in their search of attacking talent.
While a deal for Millwall’s Zian Flemming eventually went over the line on the finally day, Rogers can’t help but wonder what may have happened if Whittaker had agreed to move to Turf Moor.
The Clarets fan said: “One of the players I was really disappointed that we didn’t get over the line was Morgan Whittaker from Plymouth Argyle.
“Reports were suggesting that the deal was getting closer and closer, and we had made a couple of offers, but eventually Plymouth just turned round and said ‘no, we’re not interested’.
“We were not meeting their valuation of him, and they just walked away and said that he won’t be leaving this summer.
“It might be something we go back in for him in January, but we will see how it pans out, because we have just signed Zian Flemming, so that fills up his position.
“The current year or so shows that we do like to hoard number tens and wingers, so we may end up going back for him in January and stockpiling a couple of players like that.
“But I was a bit gutted we didn’t sign him and I really wish we did sign him because I think he was a pretty exciting future ahead of him.”
While Burnley missed out on a deal for Whittaker this summer, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see the Clarets return for a deal either in January, or even next summer.
With 27 goal contributions for the Pilgrims in the previous campaign, the left-footed star was fundamental to everything the Green did well during 23/24, and could catch the eye once again if he has a similar campaign this time around.
