“Fair play to him but He wasn’t happy about not taking it, We had a few chances and I thought, this one is mine”-Sky pundit shares what he noticed Joel Piroe do after penalty incident Vs Hull as Summerville explains why he overruled Piroe to take penalty
Don Goodman has shared what he noticed Joel Piroe do immediately after Crysencio Summerville put Leeds United in front from the penalty spot against Hull City on Monday night.
Leeds needed all three points to make sure they kept up pace with Ipswich and Leicester City in the battle for automatic promotion to the Premier League.
They did just that, but left it very late. Sam Byram opened the scoring, heading home at the back post after Cree Summerville‘s shot was parried. Fabio Carvalho, a Leeds target in January, equalised for Hull.
Leeds were frustrated in the second half, playing well below what Leeds fans have come to expect from Daniel Farke’s side. Hull had chances too but were unable to put themselves in front.
Thankfully for Leeds, Regan Slater decided to have a moment to forget when he fouled Crysencio Summerville inside the penalty area in the 87th minute.
Joel Piroe had only just come on as a sub and was the man to put the ball on the penalty spot. However, just as he steadied himself, Summerville emerged and took the ball off him, insisting that he would be the one to take the kick.
Piroe, understandably, was upset to have the ball taken off him. Fortunately, Summerville was able to roll the ball into the back of the net to send Elland Road into a frenzy.
And shortly after, Don Goodman shared on Sky Sports (broadcast on 1/4; 21:45) what he noticed Piroe do as the goal was scored.
“Fair play to Joel Piroe, he went over to Summerville and celebrated. He wasn’t happy about not taking it,” he said.
Crysencio Summerville comments on taking Leeds penalty
A huge win for Leeds, pushing the Whits back into the top two. Summerville spoke to Sky Sports after the match, after deciding to take the ball off £16m Joel Piroe to score. Piroe is normally the penalty taker.
“I felt good in the game. We had a few chances and I thought, this one is mine. So I took it, and I’m happy with the goal today. Very big three points, undefeated at home. To take all three points is amazing.”
It was remarkable that Summerville was prepared to do that. It was already a massive penalty in our season with the top three starting to pull away from Southampton. So the pressure was immense.
But that increased considerably when Summerville took the ball off of Piroe. It was an ugly incident, and it would have done nothing for the supporters’ nerves at that stage of the game.
But Leeds now have a huge three points in the bag. So you would hope that Summerville and Piroe will be able to quickly move on from the incident.
