EXCLUSIVE: Wolves tell £63m flops to find new clubs before the start of the season as Gary O’Neil informs duo they are not part of his future plans at Molineux

Two Wolverhampton Wanderers players have been told to find new clubs before the start of the new season.

Gonçalo Guedes and Fabio Silva did not travel with the Wolves squad to Marbella and have been told to find a new club side this summer before the start of the season.

It’s understood that the pair have been given extra time off to explore their options with their futures in doubt. Wolves are also actively seeking resolutions in a bid to recoup as much of the £63.1 million that was spent to bring the two attackers to Molineux.

Guedes, who joined from Valencia in August 2022 for £27.5 million, has made just 18 appearances for the Old Gold. The 27-year-old has failed to live up to expectations as he’s totted up less than 1,000 minutes and only scored two goals.

Two loans – firstly to Benfica and then to Villarreal – didn’t work out either as Guedes netted a combined five goals in 48 matches. The winger wasn’t in Gary O’Neil’s plans last campaign and that’s the case again, so a transfer away is very likely.

Things haven’t worked out for Silva, either. The now 21-year-old joined as a teenager with a mightily high ceiling but just five goals and six assists in 72 games represent awful value from the £35.1 million paid to Porto in 2020.

Loan moves to RSC Anderlecht, PSV Eindhoven and Rangers have revitalised Silva’s form somewhat but the striker has no future with Wanderers. With interest aplenty from abroad, it awaits to be seen just how much Wolves can recoup.

It’s a different outlook for fellow attacker Daniel Podence, who has made the pre-season squad. The winger won the Europa Conference League on loan at Olympiacos last campaign and has been linked with a permanent move but remains with Wanderers for now.
