Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer took to social media throughout the Magpies’ sensational home win over Tottenham which pushes Eddie Howe’s side closer to Champions League qualification.

Alan Shearer hailed Newcastle United as ‘brilliant’ after they tore Tottenham apart to move closer to Champions League qualification.

Eddie Howe’s side romped to a 6-1 victory over their nearest top-four rivals, racing into a five-goal lead within 21 minutes at St James’ Park.

Jacob Murphy and Alexander Isak both netted braces, with Joelinton scoring Newcastle’s second of the match after only six minutes.

Harry Kane pulled one back shortly after the restart, but the five-goal cushion was restored when substitutes Miguel Almiron and Callum Wilson combined for the number nine to poke home from close-range.

It is a seismic result which means the Magpies now sit six points clear of Tottenham in the table, with Howe’s side also holding a game in hand. The Magpies face a swift turnaround with a Thursday night trip to Everton, while Cristian Stellini’s side must dust themselves down quickly when they host Manchester United on the same evening.

Shearer regularly takes to social media during the matches to offer his assessment of Newcastle’s performance. The club’s all-time goalscorer posted several times during the emphatic victory over Tottenham, and summed it up following the full-time whistle.

Shearer simply wrote ‘brilliant’ to accompany the club’s post marking the full-time whistle, having previously described the devastating opening as ‘bloody good’.

The victory now means Newcastle are six points clear of Tottenham in the table having played one game fewer, and face a quick turnaround as they return to action on Thursday night away at Everton.
