“Be careful what you wish for, The system is designed to make upward mobility very, very difficult”- Alan Shearer issues timely warning to Aston Villa after recent success as he uses Leicester as example

Alan Shearer has sent a warning to Aston Villa and some of their rivals after Leicester City’s relegation to the Championship.

The Foxes will be playing in the second tier of English football next season for the first time in almost a decade. Dean Smith’s side beat West Ham on the final day of the season, but it didn’t matter as Everton’s win over Bournemouth confirmed their relegation.

It’s been a remarkable decline from the East Midlands club who were Premier League champions in 2016 and FA Cup winners as recently as two years ago.

And amid the success that Villa have enjoyed since Unai Emery’s arrival in October, Shearer warned “be careful what you wish for.”

“What I would also say is, when you look at the success that Leicester have, there are 12 or 13 clubs in the Premier League that that could happen to in the near future, because the system is designed to make upward mobility very, very difficult. So, just be careful what you wish for,” he told BBC Match of the Day on Sunday.

His comments came after Villa secured European football for next season. The Villans now need to overcome a two-legged playoff in August to seal a place in the Conference League group stages next season.
