“Alot of Leeds fans will be happy to see his back in January, Their patience is wearing thin”- Dean Jones claims Leeds fans would not care if 27yr old star leaves club in January as player continues to push for exit
Leeds United fans would be happy to see Junior Firpo leave the club in January as “patience is wearing thin”, according to Dean Jones.
Speaking to GiveMeSport on Saturday (9 December), the former Eurosport journalist said he believes the 27-year-old is a “better player” than the supporters have seen during his time at Elland Road.
But after Foot Mercato reported on 28 November that the Dominican left-back’s former club Real Betis want to sign him, he believes Leeds should allow him to make an “emotional return” back to the La Liga side if he wants to leave.
“I do think he is a better player than Leeds have seen so far, but patience is wearing thin,” said Jones. “I think that a lot of Leeds fans will probably be happy to see the back of him.
“From Leeds’ point of view, I think they should be working to make this deal happen. If there is genuine interest from the Betis end of things, and the player is looking for that emotional return to somewhere that might help him get back to his best form, it probably makes sense for everybody.”
It does feel a bit like Firpo could do with a fresh start after his time at Leeds has been pretty disappointing for himself and the club.
Since he arrived from Barcelona in 2021, the left-back has suffered several injuries that have prevented him from having a consistent run in the side.
After returning to the fold recently, the Dominican has been struck down with another issue that has kept him out of the past couple of games.
If a move back to Betis, where he started his career, is at all a possibility, then maybe a deal would suit everyone as the Whites do have some cover in that area of the pitch.
His value has, however, probably gone down significantly since they signed him for £13million two years ago, meaning a substantial loss would be on the cards.
In other Leeds United news, a Whites player has reacted after being told what Marcelo Bielsa recently asked about him.
