Sheffield Wednesday veteran Liam Palmer has opened up on his eventual retirement from football. Liam Palmer signed a new Sheffield Wednesday contract earlier this summer, keeping him at the club for at least another season.

The versatile defender-come-midfielder, come full-back has now made 436 total appearances for Sheffield Wednesday, ranking 8th in the club’s all-time appearance list.

32-year-old Palmer plays in his testimonial match this weekend with Spanish outfit Leganes travelling to Hillsborough for what is also Danny Rohl‘s side’s final pre-season friendly.

Sheffield Wednesday welcome Wayne Rooney’s Plymouth Argyle in the opening game of the 2024/25 Championship season later this month.

It comes after a very exciting summer for the Owls who’ve signed nine new players, with Palmer along with Barry Bannan, Josh Windass, Dominic Iorfa, and Di’Shon Bernard all signing new deals after their previous deals came to an end. Palmer has recently spoken on Owls Heaven ahead of his testimonial match, discussing the Peterborough United comeback in 2023 and much more, including his eventual retirement.

Speaking to pundits Joe Crann and Rob Staton, Palmer discussed his eventual retirement from football, albeit a few years down the line yet.

Appearing on Owls Heaven, Palmer explained how he’s dreading the day of his retirement from professional football.

Palmer though revealed how he hopes to finish his career with boyhood team Sheffield Wednesday.

Palmer said: “I wouldn’t change anything. Any part of my journey. I don’t think I’ve got any regrets.

“I’m dreading that day when I have to hang my boots up. I hope it’s at this club, because nothing will ever compare to stepping out on that green grass at Hillsborough.”

Footballers today can play well up to their late 30s, and so Palmer has a long time left to play yet, barring any serious injuries and whatnot.

Right now, Sheffield Wednesday are on an upwards trajectory under Rohl, and if the club remains on this trajectory then they could achieve promotion to the Premier League in the coming years. If that’s the case; Sheffield Wednesday achieve promotion to the Premier League when Palmer is, say, 34 or 35, then it might leave the club with a very difficult decision on his future.

For now though, Palmer remains a very important player and a truly beloved player among fans and players like, and he could once again play a very important role for the club in 2024/25.
