Over the past week or there’s been claims in the Dutch media that Ajax are considering signing Wout Weghorst this summer. Even though the reports initially carried surprise at the prospect, there was eventually a consensus that it may not be such an odd transfer.
Weghorst only has a year left on his contract with Burnley and would therefore be relatively cheap, and he could provide a squad option for Ajax, who fell dramatically short last season.
Prior to being linked with Ajax, the Burnley owned player was repeatedly said to be edging towards an FW Twente move. The inclusion of the Amsterdam club threatened to push the finances higher on all counts, which would be good for Burnley and the player’s camp.
FC Twente’s technical director Arnold Bruggink has now suggested it’s all transfer games, and insisted he’s not concerned at all.
Quoted by Dutch outlet Soccer News, he said: “I also hear all the rumours and speculation, but we won’t be fooled and we are not that concerned about it.
“To be honest, I’m super relaxed about it. We still have very good contact with Wout and his agent. The situation is still unchanged.
“The entire market has come to a standstill, everyone is watching the European Championship. Only then will violence erupt. Agents are enquiring a lot about our players, but no one has actually reported to the club yet.”
It’s unlikely Burnley would have leaked Ajax interest to the Dutch media, but there’s a possibility Weghorst’s camp did. That could help them push the player’s wages demands higher… yet Twente, and specifically Bruggink, aren’t having any of it.
