Wolves are reportedly now in advanced talks with a target who is about to become a free-agent this summer. The Premier League season finishes on Sunday, with Wolves playing their final game of the campaign against Liverpool at Anfield.

It has been a season of real surprise at Wolves, after the chaos of last summer that saw a host of players leave, as well as Julen Lopetegui. Gary O’Neil has done a great job, and Wolves are currently 13th. The lowest they can finish on Sunday is 14th.

The task for O’Neil was to keep Wolves up and he has done that pretty convincingly. Wolves looked as though they could push for European football at one stage but ultimately, injuries had a major impact and the small squad has just run out of steam.

It seems preparations are already underway for the summer and apparently, the club are in talks to sign a striker. O’Neil really wanted to bring one in in January but ultimately, the financial situation made things very difficult.

Armando Broja was a target at the end of the window, but it was Fulham who signed the Albanian on loan in the end. There was once again some talk about Che Adams in January, but nothing materialised. However, it now looks like Wolves could be making moves.

It has been reported by Football Transfers this morning that Wolves have now entered into ‘advanced talks’ with the player about a summer switch.

It seems that regardless of whether Southampton achieve promotion via the play-offs, Adams will be leaving St Mary’s Stadium when his contract expires, and Wolves appear to have taken a step forward to sign him.

Ben Jacobs confirmed reports on X that Wolves are in advanced talks to land the forward from Southampton on a free, with Adams fighting to be fit for the second leg against West Brom on Friday.

His caption read: “Wolves are in advanced talks with Che Adams. Adams’ Southampton contract expires next month and Wolves are looking for economical options to boost their attack.”

We will see if Wolves can get this over the line. But you would imagine there’s a reasonable chance of it happening given how long the club have been linked, and the fact Adams’ contract is about to expire.

Signing Adams – who is a Scotland international – this summer would be a decent move from Wolves. It’s low-risk because there is no transfer fee involved. And Adams has experience of playing in the Premier League, making 124 appearances in the competition and scoring 25 goals.

He’s by no means prolific in the top-flight. But Wolves need to pack out their squad a bit more for next season and Adams seems like an O’Neil type of player in that he is quite mobile. We have seen how the manager can improve players.

He’s just plundered 17 goals across all competitions for Southampton in 2023/24, meaning he has outscored both of Wolves’ top two scorers Hwang Hee-chan and Matheus Cunha, so he could be well worth a punt.
