“We’re after a number 9, but they have to be good enough to come into this team, I’m confident we’ll get one done”- Gary O’Neil confirms Wolves are looking to sign a striker as Adams and Ekitite links intensify
O’Neil delivers ‘confident’ transfer update after Brentford win and names two striker options after Cunha and Hwang
Wolves are into the fourth round of the FA Cup after beating Brentford 3-2 at Molineux in the third round replay.
Gary O’Neil‘s side have now made it five games unbeaten across all competitions, with four of those being victories.
It was the brilliant Matheus Cunha‘s penalty in extra-time that ensured the win tonight, after Wolves twice fell behind in the game.
Nathan Collins gave Brentford the lead but Nelson Semedo cancelled it out soon after, but Neal Maupay would grab a second for the visitors.
But O’Neil put his faith in the talented young Nathan Fraser, and he repaid that show of faith with a goal moments after his arrival in the second-half, with Cunha grabbing the winner.
Yesterday, we saw Cunha operate more from the left, with Jean-Ricner Bellegarde playing through the middle. The Frenchman is primarily an attacking midfielder, but we have often seen him get into the box to make things happen this term, and O’Neil seemingly felt he could do a job tonight.
In the second-half, Fraser was brought on – and the youngster gave a really solid account of himself.
It has been widely reported that Wolves are in the market for a new striker this month, and O’Neil gave an update on the search after tonight’s game. But he also suggested that he sees Bellegarde and Fraser as two options to play up top.
Journalist Nathan Judah wrote on X: “We’re after a number 9, but they have to be good enough to come into this team. I’m confident we’ll get one done, but at the moment Bellegarde understands the 9 role, along with Nathan Fraser.
So O’Neil is ‘confident’ that Wolves will sign a new striker this month, which may suggest something is already in the pipeline.
At the moment, he is working wonders with the options he has, so it’s exciting to think about what he could do if he actually gets an out-and-out striker of his choosing.
There has been talk about Hugo Ekitike perhaps signing on loan from Paris Saint-Germain.
But Che Adams, who is out of contract at the end of the season, has also been mentioned several times and feels like a more likely incoming.
