EXCLUSIVE: Wolves closing in on first January signing as club reach advanced talks to sign highly rated young Portuguese winger for £10m with Gary O’Neil looking to repeat Pedro Neto masterstroke
Wolves are reportedly closing in on the signing of young winger Rodrigo Gomes from Portuguese side Estoril.
The winter window is now open for business and Wanderers are looking to make some moves this month.
The priority is thought to be a new striker, with Fabio Silva having already joined Rangers, and Sasa Kalajdzic potentially set for Eintracht Frankfurt with a loan agreement already in place.
But it looks as though Wolves have identified a young player over in Portugal – and a move appears to be getting closer with the English side reportedly in advanced talks over the player’s signature.
Yesterday, journalist Bruno Andrade reported that Gomes is ‘on his way’ to joining Wolves from SC Braga, having shone this season on loan with Estoril.
The proposed deal is worth around £10 million, and the expectation at the moment is that Gomes would remain with Estoril until the end of the season and then join up with Wolves in the summer of 2024 (via Mais Futebol).
Gomes has caught the eye this season having scored six goals and made six assists in 18 games. By trade, Gomes is a winger but this term he has operated as a right-back or right wing-back for Estoril. He also has the versatility to play on the left side.
So it looks as though Wolves are closing in on a very exciting young player, who might be someone to watch out for from next season.
Alex Goncalves of respected Portuguese website Tuga Scout reported yesterday that Gomes is a player who ‘loves to be involved in all aspects of the game’, and that his ‘versatility is his strength’.
Goncalves adds that Gomes idolises Joao Cancelo and Rafa Silva, which perhaps gives an indication as to his style of play.
Wolves have had great success with Pedro Neto, who started his career at Braga just like Gomes. Wolves also landed Toti Gomes and Chiquinho from Estoril, so there is reason to get excited about a deal for Gomes.
