“The only thing that could stop them from doing a Leicester this season”- Jamie Redknapp pinpoints the only one thing that can stop Aston Villa from winning the Premier League title this season
Aston Villa do not have enough squad depth to replicate Leicester City’s feat of winning the Premier League against the odds.
That’s according to pundit Jamie Redknapp, who was asked about Villa’s chances of winning the title following their 1-0 win over Arsenal at Villa Park. Despite winning 15 home league games in a row, Redknapp does not thing they are champions material.
Early comparisons are being made to Leicester, who defied odds of 5000/1 to win the Premier League in 2015-16. While Villa were not given such long odds, it would still be an impressive feat to interrupt the dominance of Manchester City.
But Redknapp is not so sure it’ll happen. “I watched the Bournemouth game, they weren’t great in that game. Quite lucky to get a point,” he said on Sky Sports.
“Do I think they are title contenders? I haven’t changed my mind. Is Leicester a possibility? Of course it is as it can happen. I just don’t think they have the strength in depth. I think that’s the only thing that could stop them from doing a Leicester this season.”
Carney agreed, saying: “I don’t think title. If they lost Watkins or Kamara, I would worry. [Man City] will come good. Anything after that though, why couldn’t they?”
Redknapp also had a word of praise for Emery, adding: “He’s shown what a top manager he is. What he’s done in Europe with various different clubs. They are flying and I am so pleased it is. He has improved so many footballers and I am delighted for him. He is a coach manager, he is so good at drilling the players.”
