“This is world class, to make such a decisive save, there cannot be a better performance for a goalkeeper”- Daniel Farke heaps praise on Leeds star after superb display vs Leicester as he calls player World Class

Daniel Farke has labelled Illan Meslier’s late save in Leeds United’s win over Leicester City as ‘world class’.

Farke was speaking to Sky Sports immediately after Leeds’ brilliant 1-0 victory at the King Power Stadium, in which the Whites brought Leicester’s nine-match winning run to an end.

Up until stoppage time, Leeds had managed to restrict Leicester to not a single shot on target, with Meslier kept out of the game for the majority of the 90 minutes.

However, that changed deep into added time as a cross from Abdul Fatawu finally found one of his teammates in Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who managed to get up ahead of Luke Ayling.

Dewsbury-Hall steered a header towards the top corner that seemed for all the world it was going in, until Meslier somehow managed to claw it away from goal.

Reflecting on that save, Farke believes it was a ‘world class’ moment from Meslier due to how little he had to do for the rest of the game, and is really pleased with his contribution to the three points.

He said: “You know for me this is world class. To return to the dressing room with a clean sheet there can not be a better performance for a goalkeeper.

“If you are more or less not involved in the first half, they had one terrific strike against the cross bar from an unbelievable angle, but to be honest Illan was not involved in the game. But to then be switched on in the 90th minute and make a decisive save, this is a winning mentality and what great goalkeepers do.

“For me today he was definitely world class. He has to go so we can label him like this but this game what he did with his feet was excellent and in a game like this you need a goalkeeper who plays without mistakes and at the top level and thank goodness we had today such a goalkeeper.”

It is the sign of a top goalkeeper to be able to pull off a save as good as that having had so little to do throughout the rest of the game.

After the way he ended last season and his error last week, this is undoubtedly a huge moment for the 23-year-old, and it should fill him with confidence.

Meslier can be absolutely delighted with the contribution he has had to Leeds’ best win of the season, and long may it continue.
