“No wonder they didn’t want to sign him, he was a very poor signing” – Agbonlahor blasts Leeds player as he names him in Flop team of the 2022/2023 Premier League season
Gabby Agbonlahor has slammed on loan Leeds United star Weston McKennie and named the Leeds United midfielder in his flop team of the 2022/23 Premier League season.
McKennie, 24, joined the Whites on loan from Serie A club Juventus in January until the end of the season but was spotted on a train to London King’s Cross – thought to be going back to his parent club – mere hours after the 4-1 defeat to Spurs on Sunday.
Speaking live on talkSPORT Breakfast Agbonlahor revealed his Premier League flop team of the season, which included the likes of Spurs attacker Richarlison, Manchester United’s Antony, and big-money Chelsea signings Mykhailo Mudryk and Marc Cucurella.
“Weston McKennie at Leeds, no wonder they didn’t want to sign him permanently,” he said.
“I think he went back to Juventus a couple of hours after the game against Spurs.
“He was a poor signing, I don’t understand how he played so long at Juventus, he was very poor.”
Although Agbonlahor has often had a real agenda against Leeds United, it is hard to disagree with him about McKennie.
The loanee has been a disappointment from the very first minute to his very last in a Leeds top and many sections of the fanbase will be astonished that the midfielder has played so successfully for Juventus in the Champions League in the past.
The £30 million option to buy this summer looks like an eye-watering figure after a string of terrible displays under Jesse Marsch, Javi Gracia and Sam Allardyce – which ended in injury-stricken Adam Forshaw being preferred in the middle of the park.
Both McKennie and Georginio Rutter had next to no impact following their moves to Elland Road in January, and this certainly played a role in the club’s demise to the Championship.
His spell in West Yorkshire was summed up by the fact he was already reportedly on a train to leave Leeds just hours after their relegation fate had been decided. Flop is a word that is often thrown around aimlessly, but in this case, there can be little arguing the fact.
In other Leeds United news, a Brendan Rodgers update has emerged after he was named as the 49ers priority candidate at manager.
