“Back in the UCL, have you ever seen a Mackem in Milan” – Alan Shearer pokes fun at bitter rivals Sunderland after Newcastle United seal UEFA Champions League spot
Alan Shearer couldn’t resist a jibe at Sunderland after Newcastle United qualifed for the Champions League.
Not since the days of Alan Shearer have Newcastle United played Champions League football – but the 20-year wait is over.
Although the Magpies failed to beat relegation-threatened Leicester City at St James’ Park, a draw was all that was required to end the club’s long absence from Europe’s elite.
Eddie Howe’s side now head to Chelsea on the final day of the Premier League season this Sunday in party mode.
“It’s a big relief actually, an amazing night to see the supporters,” United head coach Howe said. “It is just a general reaction to what we’ve achieved – it is incredible. It’s been a great evening for us.”
Among those celebrating tonight is club legend Shearer, Newcastle’s record goalscorer. “Champions league anybody,” he tweeted. And he couldn’t resist a dig at bitter rivals Sunderland.
Shearer scored twice as Newcastle drew 2-2 with Inter Milan at the San Siro in 2003.
