“It’s sad, it’s like, it’s not my fault, it’s his fault”- Darren Bent faults Wolves for sacking set piece coach Jack Wilson as he claims coach was made a scapegoat for club’s poor form instead of Gary O’Neil

Wolves made one sacking this week, but it perhaps wasn’t the announcement that some expected or hoped for.
Gary O’Neil is a man now under big pressure at Molineux, having yet to oversee a win in the Premier League this season. Wolves have taken just one point from their first seven games, and supporters are growing increasingly concerned.
For now, though, O’Neil retains the support of the Wolves board and will be given more time to turn things around. He’s keeping his job for now, but one man who isn’t is the set-piece coach Jack Wilson. Wolves have reportedly now parted ways with Wilson, after his stint did not work out after three months.
Wolves have shipped goals from set-pieces in five of their seven league games so far, and scored just one. Apparently, Wilson did not integrate particularly well, and he has now departed.
Yesterday, Darren Bent reacted to that decision by Wolves on talkSPORT. There was a rather mixed reaction to the news that Wolves have parted ways with Wilson after just three months.
Some felt heads needed to roll, and Wolves’ record on set-pieces this season has indeed been poor. However, others believe that Wilson is a fall guy. There is a notion that Fosun need to be seen taking action amid the struggles, and that Wilson is the sacrificial lamb and has been thrown under the bus.
Yesterday on talkSPORT, former Premier League striker Darren Bent gave his take on the situation.
He said: “It’s a bit sad, that. I think it’s a bit, it’s a little bit, like, it’s not my fault, it’s his fault.”
Wilson had arrived at Wolves with a good reputation after helping previous club Manchester City make marginal gains from dead-ball situations.
Some will agree with Bent’s view of Wolves sacking Wilson
Those who would like to see O’Neil get sacked did not really take his decision over Wilson particularly well. In their eyes, the buck ultimately stops with the manager. Wolves’ record on set-pieces this season has admittedly not been very good, but O’Neil is the man running the show.
Some fans simply feel there are far greater issues at the moment.
Players have been shoehorned into unnatural positions. Creative stars like Rodrigo Gomes, Tommy Doyle and Pablo Sarabia are hardly getting a look in. The defending in open play has been woeful at times, with Toti Gomes’ criticised for his form of late for Wolves.
There is also potentially a psychological issue going on, with Wolves unable to close out games from good positions.
But Wolves have decided to axe their set-piece coach, which is a decision that was made between O’Neil and the board. We will now see if this will genuinely be the right call.
