Arsenal survived a scare by scoring two stoppage-time goals to claim all three points against Leicester City in the Premier League on Saturday.

Last week, there were several dubious calls made when Manchester City and Arsenal shared the points, well, it’s fair to say that the same happened again for the London club.

Whether you felt that Mikel Arteta’s side were hard done by at the Etihad, or the other way around, the fact is that it made headlines. And, when Arsenal and Leicester were level at 2-2, it could have been a different game had the on-field referee – Samuel Barrott – had the courage to make the right call.

One thing is for sure is that it annoyed Alan Shearer and he was sure to express his views because he felt that Riccardo Calafiori was lucky to stay on the pitch.

The legendary striker thinks, at 2-2 and when the Italian was on a yellow card, he should have been carded again for a foul on Facundo Buonanotte, who was booked instead.

There was a clear trip from the Arsenal defender, with Shearer labelling it an ‘awful decison’, as he told Premier League Productions (28/09/24 at 5:10 pm).

“I think that’s an awful decision from the referee” said Shearer. “You can clearly see Calafiori sticking his leg out. Deliberate trip, a yellow card it should have been absolutely. 

“It’s such an important point of the game. To rub salt into the wounds, Buonanotte gets a yellow card instead. Look, he sticks his leg out. It’s a deliberate trip. All day that’s a yellow card.”
